Map of Andhra Pradesh

In case you're interested, I found a link to a map: Click on the "Andhra Pradesh Times" link. On the map, click on the "East Godavari" district. Amalapuram is bolded, near the bottom of the page. (it's somewhat near the coast of the Indian Ocean)

I've posted my India photos to Ofoto.com for your viewing pleasure. Currently set one has titles for each picture; I plan to take the time to do that for the other two.

Set one: Bombay, Amalapuram
Set two: Delhi, Agra, Jaipur
Set three/details: Qutb Minar, Taj Mahal, Amber Palace

I've been watching news coverage of Asia following Sunday's tsunami with a mix of sadness and awe. I'm grateful that the areas of Andhra Pradesh I visited were relatively spared, but so many thousands have died, and many times that number were affected. May the gods bring comfort to all of them, and may compassion guide those in government and those bringing aid.

Christmas wishes

Happy Holidays, Happy Solstice, Merry ChristmaHanuKwanzaMas to all. The
holiday celebration fell on the 23rd this year and it was a great time. The
house was entirely full, and it was a wonderful thing to have four little
children running around. My mom, my brothers and families, my little
brother, myself and Aaron were all here for the day. Our schedule went out
the window (unusual for us?) and we had lunch then opened presents and
adults talked (while kids played hide 'n' seek and with all our old toys).
The Chris and Pete went out in the snow so Lorenzo and Emma could sled down
the hill. My mom said we all laughed because she cooked a turkey when we
were so full, but we ate almost half of it.

This Christmas ended up being my favorite so far... it was all about family
getting together, and the kids having fun together, and the adults having
fun watching them and talking (more than we ever have, I think).

Yesterday and today...? too much tv. Then again, it's days after
"Christmas".

I'm wrapping up my 2nd family medicine rotation out in Onaway. The clinic staff is really fun; I felt comfortable the first day (whereas in other offices it might take 2-3 weeks). I can talk with patients and they ask me "so what would you do"... very helpful practice for me. However, the patient population has been very healthy (yay! for them) and not coming in to the doctor (boo! for me) and I've had some slow days. The tiny cynic in me thinks it's because no one has the insurance coverage to pay for visits.

So, other than that, I've been meditating on the conservative shift of our country, and how, as someone said today on Fresh Air, the "Right is better at using the AM waves for getting their message out" or something. The "Left is too nuanced to get their message out quickly in soundbites" which must meant that their message is wrong or something. Bah. I think that some (certainly not all) of conservative-minded people are not taking the time to examine what they're hearing, to analyze the FACTS and instead accept the editorial statements. It's not easy to think for yourself and question things. And I don't really buy the "left bent of the media"... I just think that some media groups are better at looking at the facts beyond what we're told by the administration, and that it's a GOOD thing to hear news from beyond the US borders... there are 200-some other countries out there.

Moving stress is getting to me (thank goodness it's almost a break!), so here's some fun things I've found recently. Things to make you go "hmmm?"

From my Homedics water fountain user manual: "Periodically change the water and clean the product according to the water condition. Keeping the water clean prevents the water from becoming sticky and forming micro-organisms. ..."
-- Huh? I guess my microbio profs were wrong when they said bacteria don't come out of nothing. "Sticky" water??

From Bile Ducts and Bile Duct Stones (believe me, it's not that riveting), p5: "In the annals of bile duct operations, the "stormy petrel" of American surgery, John B Murphy of Chicago, merits a unique place".
-- Yes, I'm sure he does. What is that word. And how is that a compliment? And how did that find its way into a serious book??

May the Goddess grant you health and joy this season....
